John Hartford – Morning Bugle – 05 – On The Road – Lyrics

I couldn’t find these lyrics anywhere on the internet as absurd as that is. I tried my best to transcribe them accurately from multiple copies of the song, but I’m sure there is some variance. Leave a comment if you have a better transcription. I wrote out some chords that are at pretty close

5/4 time
1 2 123 1 2 123...
D D G A
When I go on the road I go fast I go slow
D D G D
It gets cold dont you know, wont get home much this year

D D G A
Back and forth up and down comin out goin round
D D G D
making love comin down, wont get home much this year

G G C D
When I go I see things i see nights without end
G G D/G?
It depends what they spend and its cold

I was out 90 days I could live any place
just a race to show my face on the road

Everyday its your turn, another verse to be earned
Its a road no big turn wont get home much this year

And the stories i will tell when Ive none left to sell
What was/once had someplace else, wont get home much this year

On the road its your day gotta go gotta play
its too short to be long so you know

When your on its all fun, got to play for everyone
Buts its so cold being alone on the road

Been a long night thats a fact, call me up we'll get back,
and though its easy to lose track wont get home much this year

When I go on the road I go fast I go slow
It gets cold dont you know, wont get home much this year

  1. I appreciate the words. I am very desperate for chords for this song. I play banjo. Thanks
